Strategic Planning – the reality behind the buzzwords
These days, we seem to be bombarded with ‘management speak’ and the latest ‘buzzwords’.
Strategic Planning and Change Management – now there’s a favourite. If I had £5 for every consultant that I had met claiming that they were the real deal in terms of facilitating Strategic Planning and Change Management, I could probably stop working 14 hour days and think about another favourite buzzword, namely work-life balance, but perhaps we will deliberate on that one another day.
Strategic Planning – the 5 minute guide.
1. Strategy isn’t revisited once a year. Or once every three years when you get the board and senior management together and pontificate for a few days in a hotel only to come up with a new version of the existing business plan, or even a brand new plan that completely tips your business on it’s head overnight.
If you do the former it’s a waste of everyone’s time and the bar bill expenses.
If you do the latter – you have missed a trick and in truth you have big questions to ask of yourself and your board, ie how on earth did we let it go this far and need to do so much just to keep our shirt on?
Strategy is the thread that runs through every part of your business – every day. You might review it periodically but you need to sense check it at every opportunity, or you do end up with the need for massive change, or the big bang theory, that many go through needlessly.
I say needlessly knowing that there are sometimes exceptional circumstance like a collapsed market, that might bring about more dramatic change than you might like – but even then if you had a closer eye on your strategy and how relevant it is, you might well have seen the collapse coming and made smaller change earlier.
2. So what actually is strategy? It’s the thread or the purpose that joins all of your activities and effort. It’s basically identifying to yourself, what you are going to provide by way of goods or services, to whom and where.
It means you need to look at yourself – to know how you are going to do it, why they would buy it from you rather than someone else and how you think you can remain competitive and desirable – or another buzzword – value adding.
Looking outside, you must think about what is happening in the outside world that will stop you from succeeding and how you can manage that risk?
If you don’t regularly ask yourself these questions and find a way of answering them honestly – and that is important because you can fool yourself, but you won’t fool a bank manager or FD with a failing P&L or balance sheet for the long term – then you are not doing your job.
3. Get buy-in from the people that ‘know’ in your business. If you don’t have these people in your business for some reason, then find someone who can answer the question you are struggling with – but try not to throw the ball to a consultant. It needs to be your thinking – not theirs and usually it will be yours whether you realise it or not!
4. Any successful strategic plan has a good action plan in it. But warning – do not come up with a massive strategy document with an equally massive action plan that looks like an impressive Tolstoy novel. Nobody will look at it after it has been printed and you will have wasted your time again. The action plan will not be delivered – people will concentrate on the day job – failure beckons.
5. Keep it simple and do-able. If you accept that you should keep reviewing your strategy on a (very) regular basis, then why make it complicated and unachievable. It’s great to reach for the stars but if you just end up with a team full of people with a neck ache because of the constant need to gaze to the sky, they are likely to thank you little and trip up a lot!
So break your strategy into simple easy bites.
- Strategic imperatives. The Three Imperatives that will ensure the success of your business in strategic terms.
- Functional imperatives that support the strategy. Sense check your delivery functions and capability. Give each function in your business three functional imperatives to achieve.
- Focus. Make sure that everything and everyone in the business is locked on to these simple Imperatives, whatever part of the business it is – ICT, procurement, accounts, logistics, etc
- Monitor. Put them on each meeting agenda and monitor them every month – enjoy the feeling of progress and feed it back to your team.
- Adapt. If you need to tweak as you go, you will know – because you are alive to your strategy on a real time basis – so make the tweak and avoid the future big bang change if at all possible.
6. Sense check on a formal basis. Finally, put a formal annual review inthe diary, it is good discipline and an opportunity to sense check it all again.
It is amazing what a business can achieve with some very clear focus and direction – the Strategic Planning process is not a black art – it is part of that every day direction and management of your business and it pulls all the constituent parts of your team around that one common purpose – your goal and vision, your destination as a business.
Enjoy the journey.

How to get the “Recently Added” auto playlist back in windows media player 12 in W7
One thing that I would often use in the older versions of Windows Media Player would be to use the auto playlist of recently added music, so when Microsoft decided to remove this from easy viewing in the new version of Windows Media Player in Windows 7 this fustrated me. Anyhow, to get the recently added playlist back you need to:
Many other types of auto/dynamic playlists can be created the same way except changing the criteria and are available for all types of media in your library, for example I have playlists only showing songs 4 stars and over.
Fax over the Internet – All your questions answered
Digital faxing provides you with secured faxing in which your private faxes remain private, delivered to your email inbox. You do not need a telephone line dedicated for your fax transmissions, and you save cost by doing away with the usual fax machine and the running costs that such a set-up requires. The word ‘Fax’ has been derived from the Latin ‘fac simile’, which basically means ‘make a copy’. Fax is a telecom technology which provides the means to transfer printed or handwritten documents at affordable prices over the telephone network. As a synonym, the word ‘telefax’ is often used which signifies the process of transferring a document to a distant fax machine over the telephone line. With the advent of digital fax many advantages have come into faxing.Faxing documents over the telephone network has the distinct advantage over postal mail in which the delivery of the documents faxed is almost instantaneous. However, the disadvantage being that this technology depends heavily on the condition of the telephone network and at times has been found to have degraded transmission quality. On the other hand digital faxing provides guaranteed quality delivery of your faxes to the recipients.
To find the best solution regarding Efax Review, it is always worthwhile doing a little research.
A fax machine generally consists of a document scanner, a modem, and an in-built printer, in case of analog faxing devices. When digital fax machine was first introduced, it became very popular in Japan since it had a clear advantage over the existing teleprompter.
Before the easy-to-use input editors were introduced, it was much faster to write Kanji scripts by hand than to type the characters and this made faxing easy. Fax devices became gradually affordable, and by the middle 0f the 1980’s fax machines became popular through-out the world.
Today, the fax machine is being used in all corporate environments, and this stand-alone device has been replaced by “fax servers” and other computer systems in form of digital fax, which collect incoming faxes electronically and transmits them to the appropriate departments or people by email or as printed documents. These systems have the advantage of doing away with multiple telephone lines for the users, and also reduce costs by eliminating individual fax machines and unnecessary print-outs.
Fax servers:
A digital faxing system is essentially controlled by a set of software facilitating sending and receiving of faxes digitally. The server is equipped with fax modems which are connected to several incoming telephone lines. More recently the telephone lines have been done away with and replaced by “software modem emulators” which use fax over IP technology.
The function of this digital faxing system is to accept the documents meant for faxing, convert them into appropriate fax format and transmit them to the specified destinations. These devices also accept incoming faxes, storing them and routing them by email to the individuals or concerned departments as required.
Internet fax services:
Internet fax services are all TAPI (Telephony Application Programming Interface) compliant which allow business and individual users to send and receive faxes over the internet. You can access Internet faxing services on your computer, which provide you with the features to store and forward fax documents to Group 3 analog fax machines, and also receive or forward the fax documents as email attachments.
Fax services such as the ones offered on the Internet are quite cheap with a monthly cost depending upon the option you choose for an estimated total number of faxes that you intend to send per month.
Digital fax benefits:
As mentioned above, digital faxing provides you with secured faxing in which your private faxes remain private, delivered to your email inbox. A big advantage is you do not need any telephone line dedicated for your fax transmissions, and you save cost by doing away with the usual fax machine and the running costs that such a set-up requires.
The fax number allocated to you by any of the Internet fax service provider travels with you where-ever you go and you can receive and send your faxes from any part of the world. Your outgoing and incoming faxes are all stored for your later references which can be retrieved by you at any time.
Internet faxing follows the principle of digital fax technology which offers you with benefits such as, viewing your faxes from any computer after you log in with your secured Id and password, and also receive information about the status of the fax that you have sent out.
Internet fax allows you to choose your fax number, where you have the option to choose the area code which gives you a more professional look, no matter where your business might be based.
Summary:
Digital fax brings you faxing at a reduced cost. With a small monthly fee digital fax provides you with ample faxing opportunity at greater speed than ever without you spending any extra money. Digital fax does away with the usual faxing machine that we know of, cuts the cost on paper and printing, and lets you have incoming notifications on your cell phone or PDA, in case you can’t be in front of your computer at all times.

Recently I purchased a Alienware M15x laptop as a replacement for a Zoostorm 6624. What can I say, first impressions are very good. The specs speak for themselves:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1024Mb (upgraded)
- 3GB DDR3 1333HZ RAM
- Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300 AGN
- 15.6-inch Wide Full HD Display (1920×1080) (upgraded)
- 250GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
- 6-cell 56Whr Lithium Ion battery
- Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2 + Free Windows 7 Upgrade voucher.
- 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo w/Software
- IDT® 5.1 High-Definition Audio
- Internal Intel® Wifi LINK 5300 b/g/n Half-Mini PCI-Card
- Integrated 10/1000Mb Gigabit Ethernet
- 1-Year AlienCare Toll-Free 24/7 Phone Support w/ Onsite Service
The Buy:
For a start I did a lot of researching when making my purchase, as my previous laptop was a work horse and ran constantly well for long periods of time and didn’t tend to grind to a hault after 24 hours usage plus. When customizing the buy, I prioritized the possible upgrades and went for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1024Mb and the 15.6-inch Wide Full HD Display (1920×1080). All the others could be upgraded at a later date myself with less difficulty and are cheaper too! For example I am going to upgrade the memory with a 2gb off ebay.
Whats in the Box?
- The laptop itself is
- The power adapter
- A black Alienware cap
- An Alienware mouse mat
- The manual binded in two thick pieces of leather
- A microfibre laptop sleeve
- Windows Vista Premium 64bit DVD
Performance:
I tested the system first using the pre-installed Window’s Vista Premium 64bit, the whole running of the system after the setup stage was exceptionally quick as opposed to other Vista systems I have used. I have since installed Windows 7 Professional after a lot off good press I have read about the OS. The whole feel of the system doing every day tasks seemed quick, opening windows and taskbar menus were very snappy. When it comes to software, I tested out Photoshop CS3 and Dreamweaver CS3, these both opened and were ready to use within ** seconds. I tested Company of Hereo’s, with the graphics set to high and im pleased to report that there were no judders and the fps seemed to be great.
As you can see from the states above it has scored nicely on the processor and graphics, with the memory upgrade on the way and a possible solid state hard drive these figures should increase.
Keyboard & Touchpad
I have previously read about the input that can be associated with the Alienware keyboard. I too noticed the input lag when pressing a key twice in quick succession so updated my bios to version A01 from A00 off the Dell site. To Dells/Alienwares credit this did fix the input lag but also sharpened up the response of the touchpad. When using the keyboard, pressing the keys feel satisfying and I can honestly say its the best laptop keyboard I have used. Although the A00 update has improved the touchpad responsiveness it still isn’t the best, however, what gamer really uses the touchpad.
Screen
The updated screen really is worthit. It has the same feel to the Dell Studio screens. Which is a good thing, the screen is very bright if needed, but also displays vivid, rich deep colours. The viewing angles are also above average which makes watching that DVD at the end of your room a lot easier!
Ports
On the right side you have a USB 2.0, eSATA/USB combo, headphone jack1, headphone jack2, mic jack, Optical drive slot, and an expansion slot right above the optical drive. The left has a USB 2.0, the charging port, a standard kensington lock hole, vga out, gigabit ethernet, DisplayPort, SD Card slot with a cover and a Firewire. The charging port could be placed a little more conveniently as it is in the middle of the row of ports on that side, therefore sticks out on the side and gets in the way at times.
Battery Life
The battery life performance states are as follows:
High Performance (CPU at 100%, LCD Brightness at 3 of 8, LED’s On, Volume at 85)
Movie 59 minutes
Gaming 52 minutes
Web Surfing 65 minutes
Power Saving (CPU at 25%, LCD Brightness at 1 of 8, Volume at 50)
Movie 95 minutes
Gaming 56 minutes
Web Surfing 96 minutes
Design
The overall design of the laptop is very stylish and sleek. The LCD screen sites flush with black surrounding case. A feature that Alienware is know for the Alien FX allows user to customize basically all the lights on the laptop including 4 sections of the keyboard, the Alienhead, Alienware name, touch media controls, touchpad surrounding and front speakers. This is a really cool feature and helps with using the keyboard in poor light conditions. With the lid closed, the front of the laptop looks like the grill of a car.
Pro’s
- Wide Full HD Display (1920×1080).
- Great graphics.
- Solid well built system.
- Stealth mode.
Con’s
- Price, there are similar spec systems out there for cheaper.
- Battery is short on high and balanced power.
- Audio is a bit tinny when turned up loud.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the developed countries helped the developing. We’ll this is what Microsoft are doing. Microsoft Windows is now available on the XO laptop with trials to begin in key emerging markets as early as next month.
It’s good to see that humanity continues to make progress. Microsoft and One Laptop per Child (OLPC) announced an agreement that will make the Microsoft Windows operating system available on OLPC’s low cost XO laptops for the world’s poorest children. Through this agreement, trials of the XO running Windows are planned to begin as soon as June in keyemerging markets . Recognizing that the challenge of providing high quality education for children in the developing world is too large to be solved by any single organization, Microsoft and OLPC are committed to working with governments and nongovernmental organizations to ensure the success of these pilot programs.
Windows is the most widely used operating system and essentially form the backbone of today’s communication network. The availability of Windows, in addition to Linux, on the XO laptop will allow customers to have an expanded choice of operating environments that best fit their requirements. The intention is to create a version of the XO laptop that provides the ability to host both Windows and Linux operating systems, giving users the ability to run either on the XO laptop.
Children in the developing countries who would otherwise never have access to computers are afforded the some of the same opportunities as the developed world. Transforming education is a fundamental goal of Microsoft Unlimited Potential, the ambitious effort to bring sustained social and economic opportunity to people who currently don’t enjoy the benefits of technology. By supporting a wide variety of affordable computing solutions for education that includes OLPC’s XO laptop, they aim to make technology more relevant, accessible and affordable for students everywhere.
From the beginning, the goal of OLPC has been to use technology to transform education by bringing connectivity and constructionist learning to the poorest children throughout the world. With future plans for a dual boot version of the XO laptop, OLPC will work with third parties to port its user interface, called ‘Sugar,’ to Windows.
Customers and partners worldwide have requested Windows support for the XO laptop, because it opens the door for students and educators to access the benefits of existing Windows based educational software and tools, as well as a broad ecosystem that provides extensive relevant and local educational content.
Technology’s positive impact can lead to the accelerated development of competencies and life skills for students everywhere. The benefits of Microsoft’s proven technology platforms for all program areas offered in conjunction with OLPC’s XO laptop create enormous potential for children and teachers to learn, grow and contribute to their communities.
Microsoft has spent more than a year working with a variety of partners to develop customized drivers that enable Windows to run on the XO laptop. Windows now supports the laptop’s e book reading mode, standard Wi Fi networking, camera, writing pad and custom keys, as well as the power saving and other features of the XO hardware. The adaptation of standard Windows for the XO laptop means that hundreds of thousands of third party applications and devices available for Windows will now be compatible with the XO laptop, extending the power and advantages of the full Windows ecosystem to XO laptop users.

Google And Bing: Their Advantages And Differences
Nowadays many people know the meaning of the acronym SEO, Search Engine Optimization and promotion for Google, Yahoo and the Bing search engines of the World Wide Web. It is well known that high technologies develop much faster than any other contemporary field. Only recently has Microsoft launched a new search engine as we know called Bing.
If you are a good SEO promoter, then you do have all necessary instruments and know how to apply them. Of course, Google still remains the largest search engine provider with around 690% of market share, and will have the leading and dominant role in web space for some time to come. However, Bing is a good restructured attempt by Microsoft to win back market share and although less powerful is still a good internet tool. So the web master should perform think hard about search engine optimisation on all three engines, then there will be a greater opportunity to widen the market and compete among online businesses. Any small piece of advertising text is useful and needed for your website.
Especially if your service or product fits a Bing`s topic, you must use every opportunity and chance to optimize with it. How to do it? It is quite effortless when you know how; first of all you must register one the domains in question. Here I wish to make the point with reference to age of a domain being an important factor for Bing. SEO professionals know well about this point. Why is it so? Search engines trust reliable and older domains that have worked for some years not some days, thus an aged domain will have certain benefits and advantages over a new one.
Another good point to understand is that of Bing and outgoing links. Google does not encourage the use of these, more than that Google can punish you if you are not careful. But Bing loves and stimulates outgoing links, rewarding the site with higher points. So be careful and make some but not too many quality links, relevant to the topic. Try not to overdo with linkage. Good links will increase traffic to your website and users will be satisfied. Again when readers like your links, Google likes what readers like.
Thus Google and Bing have different ranking regimes, and a careful balance must be kept in order to rise on both. For example, the first one starts to index the page from the top to the bottom, Bing is grouping data into sub-categories. It means that you must distribute key words and key phrases taking into account these peculiar features either on the top or on the bottom of the page. One you have created a link in Bing, you need to write related text which will become the anchor text. This again is an important factor; remember text is connected with the corresponding pages. You had better include keywords in your title, Bing likes it. Another difference between Google and Bing is form of web presentation: the Google likes blogs whereas Bing prefers static websites.
At the moment Google has more weight on the web arena than Bing, but everything can change.

An IT function: Non-core to ‘innovation critical’ in 12 months.
It was 12 months ago. I had just been passed the reins. Bingo, I now own all the support functions in the business, including IT.
Interesting. The IT function. I know that there’s a few of them, I know we have developers and techies that keep things going, but we never see them, never speak to them and I don’t recall ever having heard them being mentioned in a strategic discussion in the business. After all we are an operational business, we just need our laptops to keep going and our smart phones to keep us in touch.
Guess I better have a review with the Head of IT – find out what he does, perhaps see if there are any costs I can strip out. After all, it’s non-core – it’s only right that they ‘sweat’.
What a difference a year makes - A prescription of 12 Monthly Reviews.
Review 1 – a nightmare.
I hope all that paper is not for me? I don’t care what my predecessor wanted – did he ever read it? Was anything ever done with it? Did it ever produce anything? Is it what you think adds value to the business Mr Head of IT? No – I didn’t think so. Nobody asked him before.
Can you keep the report to 6 pages so we have time to read it? Thanks. Yes, you include what you think is important. You’re the specialist. As a tip, if it doesn’t support our strategy, don’t do it and don’t report on it!
Review 12 – I’m getting seriously excited.
Alignment. The programme of work is now aligned to the strategy and prioritised correctly.
Engagement. The department has come out from under its blanket. They have spent 12 months engaging with the rest of the business. Attending departmental and operational reviews and getting involved in delivering the service to our customers. The business now knows we have an IT function and what it can do. It has helped ignite the innovative thinking in the business. Ideas now readily flow. The dam has burst. The excitement is palpable.
Delivering. ‘20% Flex’ has been built in to the schedule to specifically design and deliver value adding programmes to the workface. This alongside the ‘keeping the lights on’/'business-as-usual’ work that the rest of the business doesn’t want to know about or understand (a migration project in fact). So now the rest of the business is getting added value….and they want more. The excitement is palpable. ITIL was fully integrated into our system allowing us to understand the IT infrastructure in greater detail and maximise our service quality and efficiency.
Momentum. Engagement feeds engagement. Confidence feeds confidence. Desire feeds desire. Every part of the business now looks to IT to help facilitate and enable it’s ideas and ambitions. And they do. The excitement is palpable.
Positional shift. The IT function, in a little over 12 months has moved itself from being a hidden support function on the fringes of the business to a key enabler around which much of our business innovation is centred and developed. ‘IT’ has permeated the psyche of the rest of the business – IT are now part of the overall delivery team, part of the overall development team and very much part of our strategic thinking which as we develop what has been a very traditional service in a very traditional industry breaks wide open any resistance to change on the basis of ‘it can’t be done’ – because the IT function are now proving that they can find ways that it can – and better.
Does your IT function sit on the outside or the inside of your business? Has it truly engaged, or does it just keep the lights on? Is it still under the blanket?
If it is, take it from a newly enlightened team and it’s customers – you are missing a very big trick!

1. One of your most important things to remember when you are thinking of becoming or are an affiliate marketer is dedication. You are going to have to dedicate plenty of your time before your affiliate marketing scheme becomes successful; you would have to be extremely lucky if affiliates drop to your ever attempt at winning them over.
2. Do your research, when you are an affiliate marketer you are looking for things that are popular but relatively new to promote. In essence that is exactly what you are doing; promoting and advertising another Company’s products, software, website hosting, service or even multi-level Marketing (MLM). It is no good being an affiliate to a scheme that has been saturated with affiliates or a product that has virtually become obsolete.
3. Keep your ear to the ground for the next big thing; it might be a new version of a cell phone or website software program. A lot of companies who offer these products offer affiliate schemes with a good commission structure and down-line (Affiliates that you find to promote a product or service), after all one of the best ways of advertising is by word of mouth, it is also one of the cheapest.
4. You could look for just one or two products or services to affiliate to that have a good down=line structure. These are affiliates that sign up to products and services using your affiliation number. Companies will often help you keep tabs on these by providing you with an account to log into, an affiliation number with a unique URL identifier and banners to name a few.
5. Without doubt you need to be looking out for scams, be very judgmental of the products you are considering affiliating with. There are a lot of scams out there offering ‘Get Rich Quick’ schemes. Remember if it is too good to be true, then it probably is. Do a quick search for a particular product or service you will quickly recognize a scam, for example: Search – ‘This product Scam’.
6. When promoting you may wish to build a website to use as a useful affiliation resource, be careful not to make your website look like a ‘Spam’ site or you will not get a second look. Make it interesting; truly believe in your products. There are many useful resources also that you may use such as social networks and forums to help you promote your affiliation link or banner.
7. You can affiliate as many products or services as you can handle, just make sure you don’t take on a confusing amount of them or you will quickly burn out and become disinterested. Remember not to be too disheartened if you do not succeed straight away as affiliation marketing can take a little time to start turning over an income. You may wish to start part time and stay in your regular job while you build up the affiliation business.
Remember ‘Rome was not built in a day’ affiliation is as much about your dedication as it is being rewarded with a cash income. There may even come a time when you don’t have to do much more than switch on your computer and see how much your down line of affiliates are selling or promoting, this is usually when you are making enough money to relax a little bit, just don’t get to reliant on your products and affiliates. It is always nice to have a back up plan.
